Operation E.D.I.T.H.
Operation E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drills In The Home)
It is extremely important for all family members in a
household to know what to do in the event of a fire in the home.
It is also important for adults to teach young people what to do
in the event of a fire.
Prior planning is the key to fire safety in the home. Create
a plan for every one to follow when fire is detected. The
following elements must be identified and followed in the event
of a fire:
- Plan and practice fire escape routes and make sure
everyone knows two ways out of every room.
- Have a plan to escape if bars cover the window
- Use a chain ladder to escape from upper floor levels and
practice escaping with it.
- Teach children that firefighters are their friends, and
they will help in the event of emergencies.
- Identify a place outside to meet in case of a fire.
- Call 911 in the event of an emergency
What to do in case of a fire…
- Crawl low, under the smoke
- Feel closed doors with the back of your hand. If hot,
use another exit. If not hot, open the door slowly, and
check for smoke and fire.
- Meet at the designated meeting place outside, and then
call for help. Never return to a burning building for
any reason.
